TIPP CITY — Sidney senior setter Alena Swearingen recorded her 2,000th career assist in Tuesday’s game against Tippecanoe, becoming the first player in Sidney volleyball history to reach the mark.

Swearingen, one of the most decorated players in the history of Sidney’s volleyball program, already holds the records for most aces in a career (146+), most assists in a season (655 in 2023), and is now almost 500 assists ahead of second place Carrie Nuss on the career assist leaderboard.

She also has her name on the single-season assist list twice, with 443 as a freshman in 2022, and last season with 542, and is second for single-season aces, with 60 as a freshman.

Coming into the game, she just needed two assists to reach the milestone. The moment came early in the first set against the Red Devils.

“This one is extra special for the coaching staff,” head coach Reese Barhorst said. “Alena has stepped into not only a setting role, but a hitting role as well to do what’s best for the team.”

Swearingen is one of five Sidney seniors, who is just games away from capping off her high school career.

Sidney face off against Greenville on the road on Thursday. The Yellow Jackets will again take on Greenville for the third time this season at Xenia High School on Oct. 14 to open tournament play.
