The Sidney swim team traveled to Trotwood Madison High School on Friday (Boys) and Saturday (Girls) for Sectionals. To move onto Districts, an athlete or relay needs to win their sectional or be in the top 32 individual or top 24 relays across all 6 (boys) or 7 (girls) sectionals sites.
The boys 200 freestyle relay was seeded as the 27th best relay across the 6 sectional sites based on season best times. The team dropped 3.64 seconds off their season best time to post a time of 1:41.67. Finishing behind Butler (1:30.60) and Troy (1:30.63) at the Trotwood sectional and ahead of Northmont (1:44.98). So the automatic bid was out, but they were able to finish 22nd overall, just ahead of Talawanda (1:41.71) and Miamisburg (1:41.94) to secure a District qualifying time. The team of Nick Dietz (Senior, 24.51 split), Jeremiah Taylor (Fr, 26.64), Phoenix Schmidt (Jr, 25.46) and Carter Shurts (Fr, 25.46) move on (along with alternate Adrian Hernandez, Fr) to swim Saturday morning at Miami University.
Freshman Emmie Braun was seeded as the 35th best in the 100 backstroke across the 7 sectional sites. She dropped 0.49 seconds for a season best time of 1:04.30 and finished 2nd at the Trotwood Sectional to Troy’s Cassidy Gifford (SR, 1:01.71) and easily ahead of the 3rd place time of 1:10.44. This time not only tied the school record (Monica Albers, 1987), but also pushed her to finish 29th across the sectionals and move onto Districts Saturday afternoon at Miami. The last qualifying time was 1:04.94.
No one else from Sidney will advance next week to the District Championships. However, over 30 personal best (or relay season best) were recorded from the 21 Sidney swimmers who competed.
